The Honorable Kofi Annan, Chair
The Honorable Kofi Annan served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006. Annan began his career at the UN as a Budget Officer for the World Health Organization in 1962. He later worked successively as an Assistant Secretary-General in Human Resources, Management and Security; Program Planning, Budget and Finance; and Peacekeeping Operations. Mr. Annan founded the Kofi Annan Foundation in 2007. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Africa Progress Panel, the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, the Prize Committee of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation and Concordia 21, as President of the Global Humanitarian Forum, and as an active member of the Elders. He is a board member, patron, or honorary member of a number of organizations, including the UN Foundation, the World Economic Forum, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Club of Madrid, and the World Organization Against Torture. He currently serves as the Chancellor of the University of Ghana, a Global Fellow at Columbia University, and a Li Ka Shing Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. Mr. Annan studied at the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi and completed his undergraduate work in Economics at Macalester College in the United States in 1961. From 1961 to 1962, he undertook graduate studies in Economics at the Institut universitaire des hautes études internationales in Geneva. As a 1971- 1972 Sloan Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he received a Master of Science degree in Management. Mr. Annan was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2001 jointly with the United Nations Organization and is the recipient of numerous other honorary degrees, prizes, medals, and honors.
