The Honorable Lloyd Axworthy
The Honorable Lloyd Axworthy is the President of the University of Winnipeg. He is a board member at the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Educational Policy Institute, and Human Rights Watch, and also serves as the President of World Federalist Movement-Institute for Global Policy. He serves on the Advisory Council of the University of Southern California Center on Public Diplomacy and of Fair Vote Canada. He is an endorser of the Genocide Intervention Network and International Student Exchange, Ontario and a member of the UN International Commission on Legal Empowerment and the Poor. Dr. Axworthy is the former Director of the Liu Centre for the Study of Global Issues at the University of Winnipeg. He was first elected to the Canadian Parliament in 1979 and served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Employment and Immigration, Minster of Transport, Minister of Human Resources Development, and Minister of Western Economic Diversification for the government of Canada. He received his B.A. in 1961 from United College (now The University of Winnipeg) and received an M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton in 1963 and 1972, respectively. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 for his work on banning landmines. He was one of two winners of the North-South Prize in 1998 and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2003.
