International Criminal Bar Conducts Outreach Meetings in Kinshasa and Lubumbashi

Twenty Years of Criminal Justice Reform: Past Achievements and Future Challenges, organized by the International Society for the Reform of Criminal Law is hosting its 20th Anniversary Conference, which will be a retrospective of the varied themes explored at the Society’s conferences over the last twenty years. The emphasis, however, will be on the future and ongoing challenges in criminal justice reform. The Hon. Chief Justice Lance S.G. Finch, Chief Justice of British Columbia, will be the conference chair.

The Interface Between Peace and International Justice in Africa
22 June 2007 - 23 June 2007

Upon the request of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), H.E. Luis Moreno-Ocampo, Africa Legal Aid (AFLA) in cooperation with the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the African Union (AU) will convene a high level Pan African Conference on The Interface Between Peace and International Justice in Africa. Experts participating in the meeting include H. E. Luis Moreno-Ocampo, Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), H. E. Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim, Talks and Chief Mediator and AU Special Envoy for the Darfur, H. E. Adama Dieng, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Registrar of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), Prof. S. B. O. Gutto, Acting Chair of AFLA’s Governing Council and H.L. Justice Georgina T. Wood, first female Chief Justice of Ghana. The meeting will be addressed by His Excellency, John Agyekum Kufuor, President of the Republic of Ghana, and Chairperson of the Assembly of the African Union (AU). Discussed topics will include Power Sharing, Gender Crimes, and Alternative Forms of Justice. The conference will adopt a Plan of Action which will be used for advocacy and lobbying initiatives.

Marie Curie Top Summer School 2007 for PhD candidates

The annual Top Summer School is designed for excellent young researchers of international law (PhD students in their first 4 years of doctoral studies). It will cover all main topics of the supranational penal system on three distinctive areas: substantive criminal law, procedural law as well as matters of legal policy. A maximum of 30 young researchers are selected for this Summer School.

The 5th Summer School on International Criminal Law

The 5th Summer School on International Criminal Law, organized by the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies and the T.M.C. Asser Institute, will be taking place in The Hague. Criminal Jurisdiction: 100 years after the 1907 Hague Peace Conference

This 8th Hague Joint Conference on Contemporary Issues of International Law honors the centennial anniversary of the Hague Conference of 1907 with a line up of panels focusing on salient issues in international humanitarian law and criminal jurisdiction. The conference is organized by The American Society of International Law, The Netherlands Society for International Law, T.M.C. Asser Institute and the Foundation “The Hague Joint Conferences on International Law”.

Prof. Cherif Bassiouni is President Emeritus of the International Human Rights Law Institute at DePaul University. The lecture will focus on the Pursuit of International Criminal Justice in the Face of Realpolitik and Other Obstacles.
