Deputy Prosecutors
Deputy Prosecutors

The Rome Statute provides that the Prosecutor will be assisted by one or more Deputy Prosecutors, who will be entitled to carry out any of the acts required of the Prosecutor under this Statute.

The Deputy Prosecutors are also required to be persons of high moral character, be highly competent in and have extensive practical experience in the prosecution or trial of criminal cases. They must also have an excellent knowledge of and be fluent in at least one of the working languages of the Court.

The Deputy Prosecutor
James Stewart swore in as the new Deputy Prosecutor on 8 March 2013, following his election in the position by the Assembly of States Parties on 16 November 2012. He is in charge of the Prosecutions Division.

Investigations Division
Michel de Smedt has been heading the Investigations Division since 16 January 2006.

Jurisdiction, Complementarity and Cooperation Division
Since February 2011, the division is led by Phakiso Mochochoko.
