Updates on Gambia
31 Dec 2005
Gambia ratified the Rome Statute on 28 June 2002, becoming the 73rd State Party.
During a mission on implementation in The Gambia in March 2003, several government officials, including the Vice President and Attorney General, pledged their support for the adoption of strong implementing legislation. The government has established an implementation committee, comprised of representatives from the Attorney General’s Chambers, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as judges, members of the bar association, NGOs and law professors. On 9 April 2002, the National Assembly approved ratification of the Rome Statute by unanimous decision. Previously, the government had indicated its intention to carefully examine the Rome Statute since it didn't participate in any of the Preparatory Committee meetings leading to the adoption of the Statute. |
