Updates on Georgia
31 Dec 2005
Georgia ratified on 5 September 2003, becoming the 92nd State Party.

During a special session on 16 July 2003, the Parliament of Georgia ratified the Rome Statute of the ICC, with 146 votes for and 0 against.

In June 2003, the Justice Ministry decided to activate a legislative Working Group, consisting of relevant Georgian experts, with input from an international expert. The Working Group finished a draft legislative package for ratification and implementation in early April. The package was then adopted by the inter-ministerial
commission, approved by the Ministry of Justice, passed along to the Presidency, and finally submitted to Parliament.

According to a delegate at the 10th Preparatory Commission in July 2002, Georgia's Commission on Harmonization of Legislation, under the Ministry of Justuce, is working on ICC issues and the constitutional procedure to bring national legislation in formity with the Statute has been initiated.
The work of the Commission has been delayed and the Georgian delegate called on international NGOs for their support and cooperation.

On implementing legislation, Georgia legislation allows direct use of international treaties once they are duly ratified.
