Updates on Madagascar
Aug 2008
Madagascar formally joined the International Criminal Court by depositing its instrument of ratification to the Rome Statute at the United Nations on 14 March 2008, becoming the 106th State Party. A number of legal and constitutional hurdles delayed the process. Civil society organizations in Madagascar played a significant role in campaigning for the ratification of the Rome Statute and the adoption of the constitutional referendum allowing ratification.
The CICC is now working with stakeholders in Madagascar to ensure ratification of the Court’s Agreement on Privileges and Immunities as well as implementation of the Rome Statute into domestic law. |
