In December 2005, President Venetiaan told the Suriname Congress that his government is evaluating accession to the Rome Statute.

In June 2005, Suriname co-hosted in cooperation with the Dutch government, the first CARICOM Regional Conference on the ICC, bringing together representatives from 11 countries in the Caribbean.
