04 Mar 2009
Dear all,
Today, Pre-Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant for the arrest of Omar Hassan Ahmad Al Bashir, President of Sudan, for war crimes and crimes against humanity. This is the first warrant of arrest ever issued for a sitting Head of State by the ICC. This is the first of a two-part message on the issuance of an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Al Bashir. This message contains numerous links to Coalition members' reaction to the arrest warrant news in the form of press releases and statements. You will also find links to background materials such as Q & A's, factsheets and more that our members have produced in response to today's historic announcement. Part two of this message will include additional statements from a cross-section of stakeholders including governments responding to the news, as well as a summary of the extensive media coverage following the Court's announcement today.
