Due to the political situation in the country, implementation of the Rome Statute has been stalled for some time. As of December 2004 however, there has been a Parliamentary initiative to follow through with implementing legislation which enjoys limited support.

The government has been working on revisions of the criminal code and the code of criminal procedure in order to implement provisions of the Rome Statute.

In June 2002, the Penal Code was taken up for review, in order to include genocide and crimes against humanity.
