Country updates Argentina- Members of Military Junta convicted on crimes against humanity
26 Oct 2011
On 26 October 2011, a Federal Court in Buenos Aires convicted 16 former high ranking officers of the Argentinean Armed Forces on charges of crimes against humanity. The crimes, which include torture, homicide, and arbitrary detentions, were carried out in the infamous Escuela Mecánica de la Armada (ESMA) during the military regime that presided over Argentina between 1976 and 1983. Among those convicted were Alfredo Astiz, also known as “The Blonde Angel of Death”, Jorge El Tigre Acosta, Ricardo Serpico Cavallo and Adolfo Donda. All 16 men will be serving life sentences. More than 160 individuals- including 79 victims of these crimes- delivered their testimony during the hearings of the ESMA trial, which lasted over two years.
This and other trials that are currently being led in Argentina against former members of the Military Junta for crimes against humanity have been largely possible following the 2003 repeal, by the National Congress, of the amnesty laws, namely the Law of Due Obedience (Ley de Obediencia Debida) and the Full Stop Law (Ley de Punto Final). |
