Updates on Angola
31 Dec 2005
According to media reports, Angolan Justice Minister Paulo Tjipilica held a press conference on 5 August 2003 to announce that the process for revising Angola's Criminal Code has begun. The Code will incorporate crimes listed in the Rome Statute of the ICC, among others.

The Ministry of Justice has signed a cooperation protocol with the Law Faculty of state-run Agostinho Neto University (UAN) in order to accelerate the task of updating the Criminal Code.

In February 2002, the NGO Coalition for the ICC was formed in Angola to promote speedy ratification.

The Parliament approved the Rome Statute on 1 August 2000.

Previously, the Cabinet approved the ratification bill and sent it to the National Assembly. A constitutional review was undertaken, and no amendment was foreseen.

To assist SADC Member States in enacting legislation, participants at a Southern African Development Community meeting held in Pretoria, South Africa (5-9 July 1999) adopted a model-enabling-law that each state could adapt to their national situations. This model law covers virtually all aspects of the ICC Statute that require state action and cooperation.
