En la campaña de establecimiento de la CPI, tanto los gobiernos africanos, los organismos regionales como la sociedad civil desempeñaron papeles claves a la hora de convertir a la Corte en una realidad y actualmente continúan desarrollando una importante tarea a la hora de promocionar la CPI. 32 países africanos han ratificado el Estatuto de Roma, haciendo de África la región más representada en la Asamblea de Estados Partes.

Sin embargo, todavía hay mucho trabajo por hacer en relación con la implementación del Estatuto de Roma en las legislaciones nacionales africanas. A pesar de que se han elaborado varias leyes de implementación, sólo dos borradores han entrado en vigor.

Además, seis de los casos de la CPI son africanos (Costa de Marfil, Kenia, Uganda, República Democrática del Congo, Sudán y la República Centroafricana).
