Sudan:
Urge the government of Sudan to ratfiy the Rome Statute of the ICC

Greater support for the International Criminal Court in the African region is crucial for the growing global fight against impunity and for the defense of fundamental human rights.

The Coalition for the International Criminal Court and its members are calling on Sudan to take a major step forward in its commitment to international justice and the rule of law by ratifying to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) as soon as possible. In light of Sudan’s recent assertions about its willingness to work with the ICC, Sudan’s ratification now would make real this voiced commitment. It has been more than five years since Sudan signed the Rome Statute on 8 September 2000. Ratification of the Statute, at a time when the ICC is currently investigating alleged crimes within Sudan, couldn’t be more important than right now.

The Rome Statute came into force in July 2002 and now has the support of more than half of the world’s nations. With Mexico’s ratification on 28 October 2005, a historic new benchmark of one hundred states – including 27 African countries, the majority of African states – have now acceded to or ratified the treaty and 139 are signatories.

By ratifying the Rome Statute as soon as possible, Sudan will help Africa gain a stronger voice within the world of global justice and also help the region participate more meaningfully in making the ICC a truly effective, truly international mechanism for justice and peace.

Take action now!

Your Excellency:

At a time when the International Criminal Court (ICC) is moving forward in its crucial work to end impunity for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes with its first three cases in Africa, I am writing to urge you to ensure that Sudan supports this new and vital system of international justice by ratifying the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court as soon as possible.

I welcome Sudan’s recent assertions about its willingness to work with the ICC, and I believe that Sudan’s ratification now would make real this voiced commitment. With increased ratifications in Africa too, the region will not only gain a stronger voice within the world of global justice but will also be able to participate more meaningfully in making the ICC a truly effective, truly international mechanism for justice and peace. I hope therefore that Sudan will take steps towards ratification and implementation of the Rome Statute as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely,
