The Coalition for the International Criminal Court (CICC) is calling on the Republic of Malaysia to take the necessary steps to accede to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Malaysia�s accession to the Rome Statute would strengthen the Asian voice at the Court and contribute to a robust and meaningful participation intended to ensure that the ICC upholds and abides by the spirit of the Rome Statute.

Perpetrators of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity must be held accountable. However, only 7 states in Asia have presently ratified the Rome Statute. The Coalition therefore encourages Malaysia to assert its commitment to ending the culture of impunity by acceding to the Rome Statute of the ICC.

Greater support for the ICC in Asia is needed in order to increase the region�s commitment to the fight against impunity.

Your Excellency:

I am writing to urge you to ensure Malaysia�s accession to the Rome Statute of the ICC as soon as possible. The Rome Statute came into force in July 2002 and now has the support of more than half of the world�s nations. With Saint Lucia�s, Seychelles� and Moldova�s recent ratifications, 114 countries have become States Parties to the Rome Statute, which has 139 country signatories.

The Court�s investigations in Uganda, Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Darfur (Sudan), and Kenya signify that it is moving forward in its crucial work to end impunity for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. The system of international justice represented by the ICC is an important tool that will ensure that the most serious international crimes no longer go unpunished.

Asian nations are instrumental in building and strengthening this new justice system, and their support to the ICC is vital to its success and efficiency. By acceding to the Rome Statute, you will be expressing Malaysia�s support for justice and human rights, and contribute toward a stronger impact from the Asian region within the Court.

I urge your Excellency to use your good offices to ensure Malaysia�s accession to the Rome Statute as soon as possible.
