CRU - Mauritania

Your Excellency:

I am writing to urge you to ensure Mauritania’s prompt accession to the Rome Statute.
African nations are instrumental in building and strengthening this new justice system, and their support to the ICC is vital to its success and efficiency. By acceding to the Rome Statute, you will be expressing Mauritania’s support for justice and human rights, and contributing toward a stronger impact from the African region within the Court.

Your Excellency, throughout its nine years of existence, the Court has proven its invaluable contribution to the international rule of law and the fight against impunity. The Court’s current investigations in Uganda, Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan and Kenya signify that it is moving forward in its crucial work to end impunity for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. Furthermore, its preliminary examinations in Afghanistan, Colombia, Palestine, Cote d’Ivoire, Georgia, Nigeria, Honduras, Republic of Korea and Guinea are a clear manifestation of the wide scope of the Court’s jurisdiction.

To date, 115 states are currently parties to the Rome Statute, demonstrating the global momentum to end impunity for the gravest crimes committed worldwide. By acceding to the Rome Statute, you will be taking a vital step to end impunity and reaffirming Mauritania’s commitment international justice.

Furthermore, as a state party, Mauritania would be able to actively participate in the annual Assembly of States Parties (ASP) of the ICC during which states make important decisions in relation to the administration of the Court, including the election of judges and prosecutors. In December 2011, six new judges, the chief prosecutor and other Court officials will be elected. The deadline for nominating candidates for these important posts is currently 2 September 2011. If Mauritania accedes to the treaty by that date, any nomination Mauritania has made for judge will become valid.

I urge your Excellency to use your good offices to ensure Mauritania’s accession to the Rome Statute as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
