Mauritania
While Mauritania has ratified most of the major international treaties and conventions on human rights and human dignity – including; the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination; and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women; Convention on the rights of the child; Geneva Conventions and their additional protocols – it has not yet ratified the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

More recently, in 2004, Mauritania has ratified important international treaties, including the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment; and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

Many hope that those developments are an indication that Mauritania will soon ratify the ICC treaty.

The Coalition for the International Criminal Court (CICC)_and its members are now calling on Mauritania to take a step forward in its commitment to international justice and ratify the Rome Statute of the ICC as soon as possible.

The Rome Statute came into force in July 2002 and now has the support of more than half of the world's nations. To this date, 104 countries in the world have ratified the Rome Statute, with Montenegro and Chad joining recently the Court in October and November 2006.

Take action now!

Support CICC’s appeal by sending letters by mail, email and/or fax urging the Government of Mauritania to ratify the Rome Statute and implement it into national law.

Your Excellency,

At a time when the International Criminal Court (ICC) is moving forward in its crucial work to end impunity for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes with its first three cases in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan, I am writing to urge you to ensure that Mauritania supports this new and vital system of international justice by acceding to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court as soon as possible.
I welcome your country’s ratification of several key international human rights treaties and I appreciate the fact that the transitional government since August 2005 has taken up a number of important measures regarding respect for human rights and for Mauritania’s international commitments.
Accordingly, I urge you to accede to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. By doing so, you would reinforce your commitment to build a country based on human rights principles, good governance and the rule of law. Accession to the ICC treaty would also bring you together with the international community in building an effective system of international justice to end impunity for the worst crimes known to humanity.

Yours sincerely

Mon Colonel,
